If your company's turnover in 2023 did not exceed six million euros and your fiscal year coincides with the calendar year, during this month of February you can change the method of calculating your 2024 corporate income tax payments.
If the volume of operations of your company in 2023 did not exceed six million euros and your fiscal year coincides with the calendar year, during this month of February you can change the way of calculating your payments on account of the Corporate Income Tax for 2024.
As you know, corporate income taxpayers are obliged to make an installment payment, that is, a payment on account of the corporate income tax liquidation corresponding to the current tax period on the first day of April, October, and December. The installment payment is considered as a tax debt.
If your company’s income has fallen sharply, it is probably in your interest to pay less corporate income tax this year.
If your company calculates its payments on account of Corporate Income Tax according to the installment system, check if it is in your interest to change to the base system.
Specifically, if the volume of operations of your company in 2023 did not exceed six million euros and your fiscal year coincides with the calendar year, during this month of February you can change the way of calculating your payments on account of the Corporate Income Tax for 2024:
- Installment system. The first installment payment (which you will file next April) will be 18% of the amount due for the IS of 2022 (which is the last return that will have been filed on that date).
As at the time of making the second and third payments (in October and December) the IS for 2023 will have already been filed, these payments will already be 18% of the amount to be paid in said tax.
- Basis system. If you apply the system of bases, in the installment payments made during the year you will have to pay 17% of the taxable income accumulated from the beginning of the year until the day before the beginning of each of the periods of payment of such payments (discounting withholdings and installment payments already made).
New. However, if the turnover of your company -or the consolidated turnover of your group, if you belong to one- was less than one million euros in 2022, as of this year, and as a novelty, this percentage will be only 16%. That is the percentage that corresponds to companies with a turnover of less than one million euros and that from 2023 will be taxed in the IS at a rate of 23% (5/7 of the tax rate rounded down).
Switching to the base system may be in your best interest if you anticipate that in 2024 your results will be lower than in other years. For example:
- If in 2022 or 2023 you made some sale of assets that brought you an extraordinary result that will not be repeated in 2024.
- if in 2024 you foresee that your sales will decrease or that you will incur higher expenses than in previous years.
